News, Reminders and Other Fun Stuff!
Students did a fantastic job taking their time and being thoughtful with their answers during the math portion of SBAC testing. I was so proud of the positive attitudes that I saw each day and the effort on the scratch paper they used. The week of May 9th, students will take the ELA portion of the SBAC's. I hope to see the same attitudes and effort!
Our class will be taking the SBAC math test the week of May 2. Please help your child get a good nights sleep and breakfast each day so they can be in top form to take the test. They will be testing at 12:45-2:40 each day for the exception of Wednesday which is an early release day.
Third graders have been learning about friction and how to go down a slide faster. They experimented using different materials in class and found out that weight is also a variable in the speed. In math we have been learning about equivalent fractions and how to write whole numbers as fractions.

Hi Families!
The 3rd graders have been very hard workers since getting back from our first winter break! We have implemented some new daily routines to encourage more autonomy and ease throughout our day, but other than that, our days pretty much flow the same.
In E.L.A. we have been mainly focused on writing skills and writing expectations. We have been doing this by answering a daily question in which the students receive feedback on creating complete sentences and how writing should flow together. We also have been learning about parts of speech (types of words such as verbs, nouns and adjectives) which influence how detailed students can make their writing.
In Global Studies students have been reviewing how to read and use maps. This will help as we will be moving into a Colonial America unit!
Social-Emotional Learning- Please see Ms. Shawna's newsletter attached where she wraps up her social-emotional work with the kiddos. While our We Care units with Ms. Shawna were wonderful, we continue to need explicit practice with learning how to cooperate and communicate effectively and kindly within our school community. I will be starting our official social-emotional curriculum, Fly Five, this coming week. Each unit of study will come with a family letter and activities to practice with your child and family to promote the skills being introduced in the classroom. Please don't feel pressure to complete these activities or to do any reporting on how you may be using the curriculum at home. It is a resource for you if you choose to use it. If materials that may be associated with the at-home activities are a barrier for your family, please let me know and I am happy to put the materials together for you as I can!

Your child(ren) should have brought home a flyer with a wish list from the Central Vermont Humane Society. Something we will be talking about with the students is the importance of not only receiving gifts during the holiday seasons, but also giving when we can. If your family is able and willing please send in some donations for the humane society. Here is the list of items they are in need of and can accept as donations! We will be accepting donations up until the 23rd of December! Thank you!

That's a wrap on trimester one!!
The students have been working diligently to master our classroom expecations, and work collaboratively with eachother during our first few months together. Moving forward we will continue with our regular reading and spelling lessons for English Language arts as well as taking a deeper dive into narrative writing. In Global Studies the students will be investigating increasingly complex maps to learn more about Vermont and New England. We will also be looking more into native americans and immigration as it relates to the history of Vermont and our communities. Some other fun things to mention....we have been working with people from the Hulbert center each Tuesday to do team building exercises/activities. We also have been having really important conversations with Ms. Shawna around relationships and managing emotions; I will send out an additional blurb which goes into more depth about that soon! Our school is partnering with a local farm in which the children have the opportunity to learn about and cook with locally grown vegetables and fruits. It has been busy, but fun!
We are all looking forward to what tirmester 2 will bring :)

The students did a nice job transitioning back from our remote learning. It is nice to have everyone back for in person learning! In math we are now exploring multiplication! In science students have been learning about "selection". They have had fun sharing stories and coming up with new names for animals that might be here in the future!
Friday October 15 is our conference day! No school for students.
We have been very busy during these first few weeks of school! The students have engaged in many team building and get-to-know-you games. We also have been practicing and reflecting on our classroom routines- why we have them, how it makes us feel, and why they are important. In E.L.A. we have been reviewing some reading and spelling concepts, and have begun our beginning of the year screeners/assessments. The kiddos have been so good about that! In Global Studies we have been learning about American Sign Language- why it exists and how people use it, and have been learning signs and phrases that allow the students to communicate with one another and adults throughout the day. Ask your kiddo(s) what signs they know and have them teach you some! Next week we will be wrapping up our assessments including our Star 360 assessment and then will be ready to dive deep into our E.L.A and Global Studies curriculum! We are off to a great start and are feeling excited for what's to come.
